The South African Football Association (SAFA) was called to account for a number of issues by the Parliamentary Committee for Sports, Arts, and Culture.

SAFA was led by president Danny Jordaan, vice-president Irvin Khoza, CEO Tebogo Motlanthe, and members of the association’s technical committee, including Sudesh Singh.

Among the issues SAFA were grilled on was the appointment of Belgian coach Hugo Broos, who arrived in the country on Monday.

One of the burning questions from the parliamentarians was why SAFA opted for a foreign coach instead of a local coach to succeed Molefi Ntseki, and Singh explained that all the local coaches identified by the technical committee had contractual obligations with their clubs.

According to Singh, the technical committee had five shortlisted coaches, three of which were South Africans while the other two were foreign internationals, including Broos.

And while Singh admitted that SAFA’s priority was to go for a local coach, he said Broos was the best possible candidate after failing to secure the services of their preferred local man for the Bafana Bafana job.

Furthermore, Singh said SAFA’s objective is to have a group of local coaches who will work closely with Broos with the view that one day they take over the reins at Bafana Bafana.

“The CEO engaged them but they had contractual obligations with their clubs,” Singh told the portfolio committee members, as per Daily Sun.

“We then came up with the name of Hugo Broos who had a similar success story.

“But our priority was to have a local coach drive this project, but having said that, I think we have the right man to drive this project,” continued Singh.

“Our key objective is to have a group, crew of local coaches working with him. Eventually, they can take over and drive this project going forward,” he added.
