NATALIE DORMER STARS AS EDIE HANDSEN ON ‘WHITE LIES’

Actress Natalie Dormer is popular for her role as Margaery Tyrell on the hit series Game of Thrones, but her next hit may just be from South Africa. Natalie flew down to Cape Town last year to shoot M-Net’s international co-production White Lies. The actress plays the role of Edie Hansen on the show.

Edie is an investigative journalist, disconnected from friends and family, working in the dying newspaper industry. In the series, Edie is determined to uncover her brother’s killer. But on the same day as his murder, she finds out she is three months pregnant with a baby she neither expects nor wants.

White Lies, which was shot in Bishopscourt, Cape Town, airs on Thursdays on M-Net (DStv channel 101) at 20:00. Natalie opened up about how much she enjoyed filming in the Mother City in an exclusive interview with The South African.

Q&A: NATALIE DORMER CONFESSES HER LOVE FOR CAPE TOWN

What was it like shooting and being in South Africa?

It was wonderful; it was a joy to be in Cape Town. Such a beautiful city, diverse and textured… different pockets and communities. Of course, you can’t get past the beauty of the landscapes. It was a just a joy to work with a wonderful South African ensemble and to be there for that time.

What did you love most about Cape Town, and what was your favourite place to shoot at?
Well we managed to shoot up on one of the trails around Table Mountain, sort of looking down… (The Pipe Track). There’s a day when Edie is hiking.

What was your favourite scene to shoot?
I don’t know about favourite, but one of the most dramatic required me putting a wetsuit on under my costume, so why they couldn’t have shot that scene in February, but we didn’t. I think we shot that scene right at the end, in like June. You’ll have to see why Edie got in the sea.

Was there anything else that you enjoyed in Cape Town?

I just tried to do as much of the tourist things as I could. And my family was with me. My real-life niece and nephew came and visited me as well. I think for children – whether you are down at the aquarium, whether you are taking a hike up to Table Mountain, whether you are going to the cheetah sanctuary, there is just so much to do with the outside lifestyle for the kids to enjoy.

I don’t get to go to that many cool places where my niece and nephew want to visit and go to the city, so that happened on this job.
